Historic Significance

The house, a 35-room mansion built by skilled artisans over the course of 18 months, is a prime example of Second Empire design, and represents a specific period of architectural history in the United States. Influenced both by British opulence and natural patterns, architects, designers and artists in the Victorian era brought together many different themes with a special attention to detail.
