Vermont History Outreach Program:   
ALL THAT GLITTERS:
A Vermont Family in the Gold Rush

(for grades 5-6)

One outreach visit to classroom; one on-site class visit to PM; pre- and post-visit activities and suggested assessments.

Classroom Visit: (1 hour)

Trenor Park presents Westward expansion frmo personal experience - sailing down the Atlantic coast, crossing the jungle of Panama, joining the first law firm in the new town of San Francisco, managing a mine.

As 49'rs, students research topics and write entries in their Travel Diaries. They interpret primary source materials relating to the Gold Rush, reading newspaper accounts and Park family letters and memoirs. They chart their journey from Vermont to California on maps provided.

On-site Visit to PM (2 hours)

At the home that Trenor Park built with money made in California, students read aloud from their Travel Diaries. They sing songs of the Gold Rush and pan for gold.
