Park McCullough House, North Bennington Vermont

Field Trips to the Park-McCullough House (all 1.5 to 2 hours)

Teachers can select from the following options that can be adapted for different grade levels and combined or customized according to an individual teacher's needs. For background material in preparation for a field trip, teachers are invited to view Meet the Family and Tour the House on this website. A Teacher Resource Page provides materials on a range of 19th-century topics for the classroom. Additional references are included in the Annotated Bibliography. To arrange for a field trip, go to Contact Park-McCullough House.

BEFORE RADIO, BEFORE TV (grades 1- 6)

Students are invited to participate in 19th century games, either outdoors or in the carriage barn. They then tour the house and carriage barn in search of clues (books, musical instruments, puzzles, games, carriages) as to how the Hall, Park, and McCullough family amused itself over a century ago. The visit can conclude with a picnic lunch, brought by students, on the verandah or in the carriage barn.

GET YOUR ELBOWS OFF THE TABLE (grades 1- 6)

In preparation for their visit to the McCullough's home, students make calling cards to present upon arrival at the house. As they learn about Victorian etiquette, they become aware of similarities and differences between what was proper in the late 19th century and what is considered polite behavior today. The students practice their best Victorian behavior as they eat a picnic lunch they have brought, and tour the house.

WE MOVED IN ON CHRISTMAS DAY, 1865 (grades 1- 6)

Classes visiting the house between Thanksgiving and Christmas are invited to tour the house decorated for the holidays, make Victorian ornaments and have a holiday tea party.
