Vermont History Outreach Program: LOOKING GRAND: Victorian Architecture and Interior Design of the Park Mccullough House (can be adapted for grades 3-7)
One outreach visit to classroom; one on-site class visit to PM; pre- and post-visit activities and suggested assessments.
Classroom Visit: (1 hour)
John McCullough shows students pictures of his family's summer home, inside and out. He points out specific Victorian architectural features of the house, introducing the vocabulary used to describe them. He explains how modern his home was when it was built in 1865, with central heating, gas lights, and indoor plumbing.
John leaves the students with activity booklets that include a writing assignment to compare the modern conveniences of 1865 with those of today's homes.
Class On-site Visit to PM (1.5 hours)
Students are asked to identify Victorian architectural elements of Park-McCullough, both exterior and interior, and to recognize changes Lizzie and John McCullough made at a later date. Inside the house, students move from room to room in search of typical Victorian objects belonging to the family.
