Mat Langlois, baroque flute, and Sandra Mangsen, harpsichord, will play music from 18th-c. Germany. Music for flute, harpsichord, or both by Bach, Franz Benda, J. J. Quantz, and J. Stamitz. Quantz and Benda were employed at the court of Frederick the Great, who was an avid flute player. In fact, Quantz had been Frederick’s flute teacher in Dresden, a fact he had to hide from his disapproving father.
Harpsichord solos from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier and Hirabayashi’s Sonatina II (2003) complete the program. Hirabayashi is a Japanese-born composer and harpsichordist who lives in Minneapolis. The Sonatina, which won the Aliénor International Competition for new harpsichord works, borrows some ideas from Bach’s E-Minor Partita.
Saturday, September 17th, 7pm. $Donation. Cash bar provided by JC's Tavern.
